AUDIO JOURNAL
Empowering Through Sound

Lavender Darcangelo came to AJ back in 2023 to volunteer as a voice narrator. Being blind all her life, she has enjoyed voice narration of children’s books for many years. The spark came when Lavender was 9 years old, getting books from the Worcester Talking Book Library. She used to record herself reading out loud pretending that she was a narrator. Then someone told her about Audio Journal. Since coming to AJ, she has recorded stories for Blind Monitor Magazine, A Positive Outlook (which Lavender created), and currently narrates chapter books for school-age children on the AJ show, Young at Heart (which is cherished by young listeners at the Perkins School and blind students in the Worcester public school system. Lavender is known to many for being a finalist on the national TV, America’s Got Talent, but currently she cherishes her role as AJ intern under a program sponsored by the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind. She is a quick study with her training at AJ and she hopes to become a long-term intern at Audio Journal to help prepare her to be a professional narrator in the near future.

Sai Pitman is a recent graduate of the Perkins School for the Blind (Watertown, MA). Sai, and his mother, Kathy came to us in 2024 to see if there were any volunteer possibilities for him at Audio Journal. Sai and his mom have been coming every week creating children’s stories for AJ that he narrates and adds well-researched sound effects. Further, Sai and his friend, Mateo Faso (another Perkins graduate), are now performing music at AJ events and hope to record music for AJ in 2025 and beyond.

David Russell is a respected and cherished member of the Shrewsbury Senior Men’s Club and can also be heard on Saturday mornings broadcasting the local morning news for WTAG. Additionally, he has been an AJ volunteer for 34 years. He reads the Gardner and Southbridge News faithfully every week. His rich deep voice, similar to the famous news anchor, Walter Cronkite, keeps our listeners engaged in the local news. Not only does is David’s voice enjoyed by many listeners, he also advocates for the AJ radio reading service in the community and has inspired our growth in AJ volunteers to just over 180 members.

CJ Poske is known by many as author of the book, Worcester Stacks Up – famous for its many stories and facts about Worcester, MA. CJ has supported Audio Journal for many years, consistently advocating for various AJ programs through her memberships with Baystate Council of the Blind and the Worcester Low Vision Support Group. She is also a current AJ Board member advising us with programming suggestions. Her suggestions and solidarity with the blind community continues to impact our programming and grow our listener base.
